The settlement was established next to a wooden Teutonic guards post from the first half of the 14th c. The information concerning granting the Charter to the town according to Chełmno law comes from the years 1404-1407. The Charter was confirmed by the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Conrad von Jungingen in 1444. Following the thirteen years war, subject to the Treaty of Toruń from 1466 Mrągowo was left within the Teutonic Sate. In 1520 Polish - Czech troops conquered and burned the town. Large fires destroyed the town also in 1568 and in 1693, however, the original town plan has been maintained with only minor changes, till the present days. During the Middle Ages two names were used for the town: Sensburg (German) and Ządźbork (Polish). During the years 1806-07 Napoleon’s troops, as well as Russian and Prussian troops visited the town which resulted in severe damages. Till 1818 Mrągowo was within the administrative area of nearby Szestno. Then it became the capital of a district. In 1825 the Town Hall was built. As of the second half of the 19th c. the town and its surroundings experienced fast economic development. In 1897 the railway linked Mrągowo with Kętrzyn and a year later with Biskupiec. During the capturing of the town by the Russian troops in 1945 it was destroyed to around 20%. The current name of Mrągowo was introduced in 1947 to commemorate Krzysztof Celestyn Mrongowiusz (1764-1855), a Protestant Minister, writer and researcher of the Mazurian and Kaszubian languages.
